Last week I had the intense misfortune of watching some of Matt Lauer’s interview with Britney Spears (hitherto referred to as BS). While there was enough said to disgust or anger anyone, I found one thing particularly irksome. BS complained about not having any privacy, demanding that it is her right–begging the paparazzi to give her a break.
No.
Everyone in this world has to make sacrifices. For most of us, it’s a financial sacrifice or some part, if not all, of our dreams. For celebrities, it’s their privacy. While I think very little of the paparazzi and even less of their tactics, celebs have no right to complain about a lack of privacy. It’s the price they pay for the benefits and trappings that come with their fame. A lack of privacy comes part and parcel with celebrity–one could almost say it’s the definition.
So if you want privacy, BS, give up everything else. Make a sacrifice. The rest of us all do. To speak in cliches, you can’t have your cake and eat it, too.
